Reading Assignments and Reading Quizzes :

Reading assignments are to be done prior to class. There will be online reading quizzes, due every lecture, covering the material in the reading assignments, which will be due by 10am the day of class. The reading quizzes are to be completed without any assistance.

Homework Assignments:

Homework problems will be assigned for each chapter and will be due by 4:00pm in Olin 100. Working homework problems is vital to understanding physics. You should not procrastinate working homework assignments; rather you should work them while we are covering the material in lecture. Students are encouraged to work together, however, each student must submit homework which is the product of his/her own understanding of the material. Students who do not understand the workings of their homework, both conceptual and numeric, will not do well in this course.

Examinations:

There will be two semester examinations, which may or may not be take-home exams (see Syllabus for dates). If an exam is in-class, then it will be on the date listed; if take-home, then it will be handed out at the end of the previous class period, the class listed will be cancelled, and the exam due at the beginning of the next class period. An exam missed without a doctor’s note, a note from a Dean’s office or prior arrangement will result in a zero.

There will be an additional final examination that will be comprehensive (05/02/08). It may or may not be a take-home exam. Do not plan on missing the final. Anyone who does not take the final exam will automatically fail this class. Everyone is expected to pass the final to pass the course.

Grading:

Reading Quizzes and Homework Assignments 40.0%

Two Semester Examinations 20.0%

Final Exam 40.0 %

Caveats: Outstanding performance on the final exam may result in a higher grade; failing the final exam will result in a lower grade, and probably an F in the course. Productive class participation will be rewarded with extra points.
